The Institute for Security Studies is in the final stages of completing its registration as a member of the Darfur Consortium. ISS is an African human security research and policy development organization based in South Africa, with offices in Pretoria, Cape Town, Nairobi and Addis Ababa. The ISS aims to inform and enhance the security debate in Africa. It does this through independent research, facilitating policy formation, raising awareness among decision makers and the public and capacity building. They have done extensive work related to the new African institutions, including the African Union (AU) and NEPAD.

ISS's work on forced displacement has included a seminar on causes of refugee flows in sub-Saharan Africa. They are currently in the process of compiling a survey of migrants in Lindela repatriation center in South Africa, with a view to understand where these migrants come from, how they came to South Africa and what they do once they arrive.
